Hideki Matsui Will Retire

Former World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, who spent 10 years in the majors after a stellar career in Japan, will announce his retirement. Matsui was a three-time MVP in Japan’s Central League before he signed with the New York Yankees in December 2002. Matsui played for the Yankees from 2003 to 2009, making two All-Star teams and winning the 2009 World Series MVP after hitting .615 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

Hideki Matsui was a two-time All-Star with the Yankees. Matsui, 38, signed a minor league contract with the Rays. However, the slugger batted just .147 with two homers and seven RBIs in 34 games (95 at-bats). He was just 2-for-19 with seven strikeouts in 10 games in July before the team released him.
