The Death of Pistol Pete Maravich

January 5, 1988 – Peter “Pistol Pete” Press Maravich was an American professional basketball player. Born and raised in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and played for three NBA teams until injuries forced his retirement in 1980. Maravich dies of a heart attack while playing in a pickup three-on-three game in a California gym. He is 40 years old.

He played college football for the University of Tennessee, was a two-time unanimous All-American, and was recognized as the best college defensive back in the country. The Kansas City Chiefs chose him with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, and he was selected for the Pro Bowl following his rookie season.

December 25, 1988 – Eric Ambrose Gordon, Jr. is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA. In high school, he was named “Mr. Basketball” of Indiana during his senior year while playing at North Central High School. Gordon entered the 2008 NBA Draft and was selected seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Westbrook played high school basketball for Leuzinger High School, then played two years in college at UCLA before declaring for the 2008 NBA Draft. He was drafted by the Thunder’s former incarnation, the Seattle SuperSonics, which relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma City six days after the draft.

September 7, 1988 – Kevin Wesley Love is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association. A two-time NBA All-Star forward, Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves is one of the NBA’s rising stars. In 2010-11, Love won the NBA’s rebounding crown and recorded 53 consecutive games with double figures in points and rebounds — the longest streak since the merger between the ABA and the NBA. In 2012, Love won the NBA Three-Point Shootout at the NBA All-Star Game. In 2007-08, his one year of playing at UCLA, Love was named a Consensus All-American after leading the Bruins to the Final Four. Love was a member of the US men’s national basketball team that won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Love’s father, Stan, played professionally from 1971 to 1975, and his uncle, Mike, is the lead singer of the Beach Boys.
