Braves Reach Deals In Time

The Atlanta Braves avoided arbitration with five players, including outfielder Jason Heyward, starting pitcher Kris Medlen and reliever Eric O’Flaherty. Heyward agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.65 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility. Kris Medlen settled for one year at $2.6 million after earning $490,000 last season. O’Flaherty received a $4.32 million deal, also agreeing to one-year deals were relievers Jonny Venters ($1.625 million) and Cristhian Martinez ($749,750).

Dominique Wilkins

January 12, 1960 – Jacques Dominique Wilkins is a retired American professional basketball player who primarily played for the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA. Wilkins was a nine-time NBA All-Star, and one of the best dunkers in NBA history, earning the nickname “The Human Highlight Film.” In 2006, Wilkins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Death of Pistol Pete Maravich

January 5, 1988 – Peter “Pistol Pete” Press Maravich was an American professional basketball player. Born and raised in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and played for three NBA teams until injuries forced his retirement in 1980. Maravich dies of a heart attack while playing in a pickup three-on-three game in a California gym. He is 40 years old.

Warrick Dunn

January 5, 1975 – Warrick De’Mon Dunn is a former American football running back, and current minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12th overall in the 1997 NFL Draft, after playing college football at Florida State. Dunn was named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1997 and earned three Pro Bowl selections in his career. After his career, Dunn took a stake in the Falcons’ ownership group led by Arthur Blank.
