Miami Heat: No Point No Guard

The point guard position is very vital for the Miami Heat and their championship run. Simply because the point guard is the coach on the floor, he is the one who can handle and distribute the ball to teammates. The Heat have James and Wade setting up plays on the court, getting the ball to the teammate in the best position to score, and controlling the tempo of the game. This is not the responsibility of the shooting guard nor small forward, offensively they’re not playing their positions. Chalmers and Cole are the primary decision makers on the court. Their passing ability determines how well this team is able to put their decision into play . Chalmers and Cole defensively need to pressure opponents in the passing lane in an attempt to generate steals and scoring opportunities for James, Bosh and Wade.

Mario Chalmers’ production at Point has lessened since his rookie season, where he averaged 10.0 points, 4.9 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.95 steals. Unfortunately, now he averages 6.4 points, 2.5 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.09 steals. This is a tremendous drop of much needed stats. His defense has also reverted to being as inconsistent as his shooting stroke. It could be due to the addition of Chris Bosh and LeBron James or it could be that he’s not who we thought he was. That’s why I believe the Heat drafted another young point guard in the first round, Norris Cole.

Rookie Norris Cole came on strong with a 20pt game in the home opener. His pace has slowed down as well as his impact on the second unit. Cole is not penetrating the lane or creating opportunities for his teammates to score. He is causing too many turnovers and he is not a defensive threat. If he wants to be the future floor general for this franchise, he’s going to have to put some time in the gym and earn the trust of the head coach.

The Heat’s lack of a veteran point guard to teach the young acquisitions how to run the point. Just the mere thought of Steve Nash leaving the Phoenix Suns and joining the Heat excites the entire Heat Nation. Steve Nash has been one of the top point guards in the game over the last decade. Nash has the steady hand and passing ability that teams with championship aspirations need. The Miami Heat is one such team. Will the Heat seek out the 38-year-old point guard? We will have to wait and see, but until then Miami’s play at the point is a huge issue.
